Putting random characters into Notepad from Java Applicaton

I am working on this program for a school project and wanted to try and launch notepad from the Java Application and have random characters be chosen from the application through the Random function but how do I get that random character that was chosen from the random function to be displayed in the notepad application? Sorry if simple question, I am new to Java. Thanks for the help!
